Biodegradable plastics or BDP are polymers that are “capable of undergoing decomposition into carbon dioxide, methane, water, inorganic compounds, or biomass in which the predominant mechanism is the enzymatic action of microorganisms, that can be measured by standardized tests, in a specific period of time, reflecting available disposal condition” (ASTM standard D6813).
A subsection of biodegradable plastics or BDP may be compostable “capable of undergoing biological decomposition in a compost site as part of an available program, such that the plastic is not visually distinguishable and breaks down to carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds of biomass, at a rate consistent with known compostable materials” (ASTM standard D6868 & ASTM standard D6400).
Even though current biodegradable plastics or BDP production capacity is estimated at 350,000 tons (Bioplastics 07/08) with our help we may increase customer demand for these products, which may translate in higher production capacity.
